Title: Engineering at the Limits of the Nanoscale
Abstract: Engineering matter at the extreme nanoscale is key to the development of next-generation devices based on the rapidly growing library of nanomaterials that offer new and improved properties and access to unconventional physics. However, the widely-used top-down fabrication processes lack the necessary resolution, compatibility and integration capabilities for nanomaterials. To this end, new device engineering frameworks are critical. We utilize bottom-up engineering combined with top-down processing to direct nanometer control of material synthesis with deterministic spatial control and heterogeneous integration of active interfaces. Such control opens up diverse new opportunities in electronics, optoelectronics and quantum technologies. I will discuss examples in the development of molecular devices for energy-efficient computing, pristine two-dimensional transistors through van der Waals integration, and on-chip nanoscale halide perovskite light-emitting devices for photonic quantum information processing.
Bio: Farnaz Niroui is an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her research pushes the limits of nanoscale engineering to develop new paradigms of active nanoscale devices and systems for diverse emerging applications in electronics and optoelectronics. Prior to MIT, Farnaz was a Miller Postdoctoral Fellow at University of California Berkeley. She received her PhD in Electrical Engineering from MIT and completed her undergraduate studies in Nanotechnology Engineering at University of Waterloo. Farnaz has been the recipient of awards including the DARPA Young Faculty Award, NSF CAREER Award, MIT EECS Outstanding Educator Award, and the Miller Research Fellowship.
