Nov. 22, 2013
All graduates of The Edward S. Rogers Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering were welcomed back to Skule at ECE’s fourth fall Alumni Networking Lecture & Reception, an opportunity to catch up with classmates and professors, and enjoy a stress-free lecture. The event was hosted in the Michael E. Charles Council Chamber (GB202) on the evening of Wednesday, Nov. 13.
More than 70 alumni attended the event featuring Professor Steve Mann as speaker. Professor Mann, widely recognized as “the father of wearable computing” and a pioneer in the field of augmented reality, shared tales of his early years developing wearable computer systems such as his computer-mediated vision system, the EyeTap. He discussed the ubiquity of cameras in today’s world, and contrasted the concept of ‘surveillance’, to watch from above, with his term ‘sousveillance,’ to watch from below. Mann demonstrated one of his inventions, the Hydraulophone, the world’s first water-based musical instrument.
After the talk, many alumni joined Professor Mann at the front of the room to try the Hydraulophone themselves and ask follow-up questions. Hors d’oeuvres circulated through the room.
Alumni events in 2014 include reunions in California, and Spring Reunion on University of Toronto’s St. George Campus. Watch our Alumni Events page for more details.
