- Zhi Li (CE) In addition to the Sedra Medal, Zhi Li also won the Henry G. Acres Medal and the W.S Wilson Medal.
- Weijian Zhou (EE) In addition to the Sedra medal, Weijian Zhou also won the W.S. Wilson Medal.
CNIB Hochhausen Prize for Excellence in Accessible Design in Engineering for People who are Blind or Partially Sighted: The award is donated by Mr. Ben Hochhausen, a retired engineer and long-time supporter of the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. It is exclusive to ECE students at U of T doing their final year design project course. This award was presented by Dr. Keith Gordon to Wasif Iqbal, Ahmad Diab Marzouk and W. A. Kavindu Gayanath Amarasingha (all 1T3) for their design project titled ‘Navigation System for the Visually Impaired’ and supervised by Prof. Olivier Trescases.
Gordon R. Slemon Design Award: This award was created to honour the most imaginative Design Project, as well as good design and execution. Prof. Khoman Phang read an inspiring letter to the recipients written by Gordon Slemon’s daughter, Sally Thorne, herself a professor at UBC. Prof. Phang presented the award to Miad Fard, Richard Medal and Mehrad Mashayekhi (all 1T2+PEY) for their project titled ‘Digitally Configurable Lab Platform for Design-Oriented Teaching of Analog Electronics’ and supervised by Prof. Trescases.
Aloha Design Award: This award was created to honour innovation, teamwork and high-quality execution of a fourth-year design project. Leon Chan, Guo Qin Low and Chia Chen Tan (all 1T3) won for their project titled ‘FPGA Video Processing – Cartoonizer’ that turned live video into animation in real-time. The project was supervised by Prof. Greg Steffan.
“It’s important to recognize the top students in ECE and collect them together for discussion and celebration,” said Prof. Phil Anderson, one of the coordinators of the fourth-year capstone design project course. “This event lets us applaud our undergrads for both their academic and project-based accomplishments.”
Congratulations to all the recipients!
