Professor Reza Iravani is featured in an article on the need for more engineers in the cleantech sector, published Thursday in a special section devoted to engineering in The Globe and Mail. Iravani is a professor in The Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering and coordinator of the Centre for Applied Power Electronics, or CAPE.
“The need for more engineers equipped with the appropriate knowledge and expertise for the renewable energy sector is obvious,” Iravani is quoted as saying. “The proposal is to set up a joint university-industry committee to identify the needs and then design a set of ‘continuing education’ courses to equip practicing and graduating engineers for this emerging field.”
Iravani is among several University of Toronto research groups, professors and alumni mentioned in the six-page section dedicated to covering the state of engineering in Canada.
Also featured are a collaborative research group developing a 3D printer for customized bone implants; Susan McCahan, vice-dean undergraduate for the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering on strengthening diversity in the profession; Goldie Nejat, a professor in the Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering who received a Young Engineering Achievement Award from Engineers Canada; and Tyler Irving, a U of T alumnus who received an award for Journalism Excellence in Engineering from Engineers Canada.
