Catherine Lacavera, director of litigation at Google and member of the Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering’s Board of Advisors, has been named one of Fortune magazine’s 40 Under 40 for 2013.
Called “Google’s secret weapon in the smartphone wars,” Lacavera holds spot number 18 on the list, which ranks the 40 “young hotshots who are rocking businesses” in fields ranging from air travel to genetic coding to government.
Lacavera joined Google in 2005, where she oversees a docket of more than 200 pending patent and other intellectual property litigation matters both within and outside of the United States, including the Viacom and other copyright litigation against YouTube, and the Apple, Microsoft and Oracle copyright and patent litigation directed at Android. She also advises on complex licenses and acquisitions, both within and outside the litigation context, including the acquisition of Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion.
ECE’s Board of Advisors was established in 2012. The group meets throughout the year to advise on and assist with the department’s alumni and advancement activities, as well as the strategic direction of the department. Lacavera is herself an ECE alumna, graduating in the class of 9T7 with a BASc in Computer Engineering. She earned an MBA and law degree, both at University of Toronto.
