ECE students win third place in Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) fifth annual Analog Design Contest
July 31, 2012
Matthew Martino and Jordan Varley, students from the Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Toronto were awarded third place in the Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) fifth annual Analog Design Contest Engibous Prize – an analog design award that showcases the imaginative spirit and inner competitive streak of today’s aspiring innovators. Matthew Martino and Jordan Varley used TI parts in the construction of their project.
The students developed a wireless sensor node powered by a PV/Super Capacitor/Battery Trio, which is a small device that collects particular environmental data using sensors. This project was utilized in a Smart Garden application where temperature, moisture, humidity and light intensity data relevant to a garden was transmitted to a nearby base station. The data can help one find optimal conditions for things like gardening and planting, as well as give an accurate land characterization.
