Paul Andersen and Shahir Daya have something in common besides their computer engineering degrees—they share a passion for giving back.

Andersen (CompE 9T9) and Daya (CompE 9T5) were granted 2014 Arbor Awards, given to exceptional volunteers for contributions to specific academic units, such as faculties, colleges or institutes, or to the university at large.

Paul Andersen has volunteered at Hart House Theatre since 2001, overseeing the theatre’s transition to online ticket sales in the early 2000s. Without his leadership and expertise, Hart House Theatre would not have served its audiences so well over the past 12 years.

Shahir Daya has been an active member of the Skule Mentorship Program since it was founded in 2005. He has gone above and beyond in this role by continuing to mentor students long after graduation. Recently, Daya volunteered to become a co-chair of the mentorship program, which has flourished under his leadership. At last count, more than 90 engineering students have been paired with mentors.

Since 1989, more than 2,100 alumni and friends have received Arbor Awards for their tremendous generosity and contribution to the experience of U of T students, faculty, staff and alumni. This year’s awardees were celebrated at a reception at the President’s Residence in Rosedale. [See a complete list of recipients].
