Professor Anastasios (Tas) Venetsanopoulos of the Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering has been honoured with the 2013 Celebrating Excellence in Greek Achievement Award for Education. The 2013 CEGA Awards will be presented in a ceremony on Nov. 2, 2013 at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto.
The CEGA Awards honour preeminent individuals who have excelled in their respective fields, strive for excellence and serve as role models within and beyond the Greek community. Four other recipients were named in the categories of Hellenism, Philanthropy, Civic Responsibility, and Family & Individual Excellence.
Venetsanopoulos is a professor Emeritus with ECE at U of T, and a professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Ryerson University. He joined ECE in 1968 as a lecturer and rose to become the 12th Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering at the University of Toronto from 2001 to 2006. Upon completion of his term he was recruited by Ryerson University to serve as the Founding Vice President-Research and Innovation, a position he held from 2006 to 2010.
He has published nine books and over 850 papers on digital signal and image processing and digital communications. In 2003, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) conferred on him the McNaughton Medal at the Centennial Banquet of the Toronto Section in recognition of “outstanding contributions to the design and implementation of communication systems, digital filters and multimedia systems; IEEE; the engineering profession and society at large.”
