Women in ECE – From Computer Engineering to AI Entrepreneur: Meet Mai Mavinkurve

For Mai Mavinkurve (CompE 0T3), innovation is at the heart of engineering. Mai is a computer engineering alumna who works in artificial intelligence (AI). She understands that her work and the computer engineering field at large provide new systems and solutions to the daily challenges faced by the public in our changing world — underscoring the importance of emerging technologies.

As someone working in AI, Mai sees how diversity in viewpoints is critical to the future of AI. Having more women involved in the development of AI brings invaluable benefits to the field, particularly in shaping its future direction and expanding its impact.  “I am looking forward to and hoping that we have more people coming into this field to better society through technology and shape that future,” explains Mai.

Diverse teams contribute a wider range of perspectives, helping to address biases, ensure ethical considerations, and create more inclusive technologies. Women’s unique experiences and problem-solving approaches can lead to developing AI systems that better serve a broader demographic, avoiding the pitfalls of homogeneous design.

As AI becomes more integrated into everyday life, its development must reflect the diverse society it impacts. By involving women in AI, we ensure that the technology evolves in a way that is not only innovative and efficient but also empathetic, fair, and truly representative of all users.
